BlackBerry boys, girls can breathe easy in India: RIM

If you are a BlackBerry boy or girl and worried that Research in Motion (RIM) may be pushed out of India, here's some good news. RIM?s India managing director confirmed that the discussions with the government of India have been constructive and that he expects a positive response soon.


It has in fact launched the new BlackBerry Torch in India for a price of Rs 35,000 and expects its reach in India to grow going forward.


MD of BlackBerry India Frenny Bawa, in an interview with CNBC-TV18?s Kritika Saxena got his take on what the response has been like for the latest edition into the BB family.

Q: What has the reaction to the new BlackBerry been among the Indian masses?


A: We are excited about the response we have got from our partners and our distributers who are going to help us launch this.


Q: Consumers have been slightly vary about the future of BlackBerry in India, owing to the fiasco that has happened with the government. Can you touch upon the status with the home ministry as far as the security access to BlackBerry chat or enterprise email is concerned?


A: First, suffice to say that we absolutely understand and respect the Indian government?s requirement and concerns. We share them and we operate in some 200 countries worldwide and all governments have such concerns and we take them very seriously. We can?t talk about specifics of the discussions that have been happening, but discussions are going on in a very progressive and constructive manner.


Obviously we are bullish about our future in India and I think the scope and scale in the circumstance on this launch is testament to the fact that we see a bright future.
