CWG 2010: Good opportunity lost by advertisers, says Ogilvy

In an interview , Piyush Pandey of Ogilvy South Asia gave his view on whether India managed to clear its name at the end of the Commonwealth Games after the negative publicity it received before the start of the mega sporting event.

Below is a verbatim transcript of the interview. Also watch the video.

Q: It has been a rollercoaster ride for the Commonwealth Games. Allegations of corruption, images of unclean lose exposing our under-preparedness and then came the glittering opening ceremony. Has India won the game of perception?

A: I definitely think so. I have been saying it all along right from the beginning of the games that we are doing a lot of negative publicity, we are allowing the world media to slam us and I am very happy man with the way the games have been put together and the way India has performed so its hats off to whoever. Allegations of corruptions and all can all be handled two from now, let the guests go. I have been saying it from day one this is like a big Indian wedding?let the wedding be over then we will check out.

Q: This event has been a test of reality matching up to the perception of India as an emerging superpower. In that sense has India pulled it off?

A: We have recovered hugely from the kind of dips that we had gone to?self created most of them and allowing the world media to make fun of you. We have made a huge recovery in keeping with what this nation is all about.

Q: This has been a spectacular sporting event. Spectators have thronged the stadia. Has it been an opportunity lost for advertisers particularly those who pulled out?

A: I definitely think so. Those who backed out have led the nation down and after what was put together, I hope, the next time there are little more positives, little more supportive and little more proud of the country called India.

Q: It?s been a good season for sport; we have been doing well in the cricketing field and other sport as well in the Commonwealth. What to your mind has been the best moment for you as far the games were concerned?

A: The last two weeks have been fantastic for India in terms of sports. A lot of sport that we haven?t watched for a long time and we cheered as if we knew the game, we didn?t know the game but we cheered for India, we loved the way it happened. Cricketers made us proud but so did a lot of tribal and archers and boxers and shooters and to top it all Saina Nehwal.
